COLUMBUS—Columbus Metropolitan Library (CML) archivists have scanned and digitized the 2 millionth item into CML’s My History digital collection.

The item is a historical photograph that depicts the High Street arches looking south from Spring Street as they appeared downtown in the early part of the 20th century. A library customer brought in the photo to be scanned as part of a larger photo album during CML’s recent History & Genealogy Day at Main Library. CML’s Local History & Genealogy team scanned the album – which also includes photos of Olentangy Park, the Ohio Penitentiary, a speech by William Jennings Bryan, and more – into My History for free public viewing.

CML’s My History collection is a growing digital archive that includes images, documents, maps, and artifacts chronicling the history of central Ohio. Library customers can loan materials for digitization to CML’s Local History & Genealogy team (Main Library, third floor) for digitization in the collection, or they can upload digital materials themselves.

CML’s Local History & Genealogy team scanned its 1 millionth item in March 2018, depicting a panoramic view of Columbus from the cupola of the Ohio Statehouse in the 1850s.

Columbus Metropolitan Library has served the people of Franklin County, Ohio since 1873. With its Main Library and 22 branches, CML is well known for signature services and programs like School Help, Reading Buddies, Summer Reading Challenge and Ready for Kindergarten. The library’s Strategic Plan supports the vision of “a thriving community where wisdom prevails,” which positions CML to respond to areas of urgent need: kids unprepared for kindergarten, third grade reading proficiency, high school graduation, college and career readiness and employment resources.
