COLUMBUS—Last month, Columbus Metropolitan Library (CML) announced that community leaders Cordelia Westwater Robinson and Grant Morrow had offered to support the Columbus Metropolitan Library Foundation (CMLF) by matching gifts to its Great Libraries Create campaign. Westwater Robinson and Morrow challenged supporters by matching any gift to the campaign up to $100,000 until Main Library’s grand opening on June 25.
After an overwhelming community response that included nearly 600 individual gifts, that challenge goal was reached more than two weeks ahead of its deadline.
Inspired by Westwater Robinson and Morrow’s generosity, current and emeritus members of the CMLF Board are issuing a second $100,000 challenge. From now until the end of June, all gifts to the Great Libraries Create campaign will once again be matched – dollar for dollar – up to $100,000.
The Great Libraries Create campaign is a $21.5 million public/private fundraising initiative to support Columbus Metropolitan Library’s (CML) aspirational building program. The library is building seven new branches, renovating two others and transforming Main Library. The Columbus Metropolitan Library Foundation has currently raised approximately $19 million of its $21.5 million goal.
“This campaign represents an investment in the communities we serve, and the response has been tremendous,” said Columbus Metropolitan Library CEO Patrick Losinski. “We are grateful to have the leadership and guidance of a truly remarkable Foundation Board that understands the impact the library has throughout central Ohio.”
Great libraries create community centerpieces that reflect the unique needs of the people they serve. To ensure Columbus Metropolitan Library continues to serve its customers well into the future, it must revitalize and transform branches to meet the demands of the 21st century community.
The library has embarked on an ambitious plan to revitalize seven urban branches, two suburban branches and make transformational changes to Main Library. Through the Great Libraries Create campaign, CML will create inspirational spaces in central Ohio’s most challenged communities to help prepare kids for kindergarten, cultivate a passion for reading in the young, empower discovery and creativity in teens, provide the books and resources for adults trying to improve their lives, ensure access to technology to those without, and so much more.
The cost of this vision is $130 million. The library has generated $100 million with the sale of Public Library Fund Notes, $8.5 million from operational savings and the library’s foundation is seeking $21.5 million through public and private philanthropy.
