The Age of Miracles

Finally read this one - it was on several best of 2012 lists and I can see why.  I read this in 2 sittings.  The earth is slowing down, days are now 48, 72 hours long.  Gravity sickness is spreading.  Julia is 11 years old and dealing with not only the world turning on its head but becoming a teenager as well.  The writing in this was great and the world building incredible.

A Foreign Country

I'm a sucker for James Bond movies and so having just seen the new one, Skyfall, was casting about for a book to read in the spy genre.  Found this one, A Foreign Country which was a great read.  The book includes a strong female head of MI-6, foreign locales, a disgraced spy trying to make it back into the game all with good writing.  Give it a try if you like spy novels or if you just want something good to read!

We Need to Talk About Kevin

This book came out in 2003 and I just now got around to reading and glad I did.  It is an unsettling book but the writing is great and unfortunately, still all too relevant.  Eva is the mother of an active shooter and is coming to terms with how this happened. Powerful read.

A Visit From the Goon Squad
Jennifer Egan

I'm not normally a fan of interconnected short stories but this book moves seamlessly among the lives of these characters.  It won the Pulitzer Prize in 2011 and for fans of the music industry, sure to be an entertaining read.

Welcome to 2013!  Brand new year of great reading ahead. I started the year with The End of Your Life Book Club.  This book hit many best of 2012 lists and for good reason - sad, but uplifting memoir about a son and his mother as they face the end of her life through an intimate book club of two.  Both have been lifelong readers and it is books that see them through the dark days.  The most poignant piece I took from this woman's life, be kind.
