TIPS/TRENDS
Gasoline Advertising Signs
A recent August 2007 auction in Florida saw old gasoline advertising signs going for over $1,000. Many of these vintage signs are collectibles now. While some of the signs are painted tin, the long-lasting ones are porcelain, enamel or porcelain enamel, made by fusing powdered glass onto sheet metal with very high heat. These types of signs weathered well and did not rust like the tin ones sometimes would. If you have any of these signs, or other petroliana collectibles, hold onto them or get them appraised. You never know how much they might be worth and they are very popular with collectors.
