We're the 2010 Library of the Year

Library Journal and Gale, part of Cengage Learning, today announced Columbus Metropolitan Library (CML), has been named 2010 Library of the Year.

Click here to hear more about this award from CML Executive Director Patrick Losinski.

Each year this recognition goes to the public library in the United States that most profoundly demonstrates service to community, creativity and innovation in developing specific community programs, and leadership in creating programs that can be emulated by others. In addition to a cash award of $10,000, Columbus Metropolitan Library will be featured as the cover story for the June 15, 2010, issue of Library Journal.

According to Library Journal’s Editor-at-Large John N. Berry III, “The culture of CML has become one of perpetual strategic planning, adaptability, constant investment in efficiency and attention to chosen priorities. It has imbued the staff with an unusual receptivity to change, and they get and engineer lots of it and rework the plan at regular intervals.”

“Gale is proud to support libraries through the Library of the Year Award and to recognize Columbus Metropolitan Library as this year’s recipient,” said Patrick C. Sommers, president of Gale. “The innovative work being done in Columbus, in particular through community outreach efforts such as the Ready to Read Corp, Job Help Centers and Homework Help Centers, is to be emulated. We applaud the Columbus Metropolitan Library for its commitment to explore new and exciting ways to support its community.”

“This is one of the highest honors a public library can receive,” said Patrick Losinski, Columbus Metropolitan Library’s executive director. “We strive to provide the most valuable and relevant services for our customers, and they truly support us and the work that we do. We are so grateful that the central Ohio community has helped propel us to this level of excellence.

“This award celebrates our unique and successful programs, as well as the exceptional service our staff provides every day,” Losinski continued. “We want to ensure that we serve as a solution to the challenges our society is facing as a whole. This award acknowledges that we are really making a difference.”

Special mentions for Library of the Year were also given to Anythink-Rangeview Library District, Northglenn, CO; Jefferson County Public Library, Lakewood, CO and King County Library System, Issaquah, WA in recognition of their service philosophy and dedication to community.

The 2010 Library of the Year Award will be presented formally at a gala reception at the American Library Association Annual Conference in Washington, D.C. on June 27, 2010.

State of Ohio Documents & Local Columbus Government Archives
With nearly three million items in its collection, CML offers something for everyone.

In addition to its vast collection of books and audio-visual materials, Main Library’s Genealogy, History & Travel Division is also a depository for State of Ohio agency publications.

You can find annual reports for most agencies going back at least ten years. These publications are useful for historical researchers, job-seekers, budget analysts and writers documenting the progress and history of a particular agency.

Besides annual reports, there are long-runs of unique journals such as the Ohio Archaeological and Historical Society Quarterly back to 1887. The Official Roster of Federal, State and County Officers (1935-present) serves as a one-stop directory to government officials, their positions and terms of office.

Ever wonder what the weather in Ohio was like in the early 20th century? Consult the Weather Headlines in Ohio. Planning an outdoor wedding and want to find out if it has rained on that particular day over the last 20 years? Local Climatological Data can help you hedge your bet on sunny skies. Are you a geology student studying what’s under your feet in Ohio? There are soil surveys in the collection for almost every one of Ohio’s 88 counties.

You can find these titles at Main Library’s Genealogy, History & Travel Division. Also check out the catalog to search for materials.

    Happy 5th Anniversary, InfoLine!
On August 24, 2004, Infoline (formerly known as the Call Center), took their first call. Now, 5 years later, this group has taken 1.5 million calls! We are proud of the personal touch our team gives our call-in customers. Just like a branch or division at Main, our InfoLine team has many “regulars” who know the team by name, (and our staff recognizes their voices immediately!) Considering the huge number of calls that come in each day, this is amazing customer service.

In fact, an InfoLine “regular” toured the library recently, and specifically requested to visit InfoLine and meet the team members she has talked to over the years. The variety of questions our staff receives makes each day different and interesting.

This efficient team resolves 85% of all calls right then and there. This means only 15% of the calls are transferred elsewhere. To make things even more seamless, InfoLine has cross trained all staff to handle all types of questions in order to offer "one stop shopping.” Customers now receive all answers from the first person who picked up their call rather than being transferred to another InfoLine staff member. This centralization of reference calls has allowed for greater efficiencies – particularly in light of our reduced budget.

Kudos and Happy Anniversary to our tireless InfoLine staff for all the great work they do!

To make lists: click on the ‘save or tag’ link for an item. By default, you are the only one who can see your lists. This is ideal for wish lists and reading lists, for example. It is also possible to make lists public so that everybody can see them. This feature is useful for experts who want to create resource lists for others to use.

Tagging: click on the ‘save or tag’ link for an item. You can enter more than one tag for each item, using spaces to separate them. To make multiple word tags, use quotes: "United States".

To add reviews: click on the ‘save or tag’ link for an item. The ‘Write a review’ link will appear. Click on it for a box to type your review in. To add a rating: click on the ‘save or tag’ link for an item. Ratings run from terrible (I hate it) at 1 star to excellent (I love it) at 5 stars.

Raconteur Theatre Company Launches Free Script Readings at Main Library
Bored on Tuesday nights? Raconteur Theatre Company will be holding monthly script readings every second Tuesday of each month beginning at 6:30 p.m. Raconteur is opening up their script selection process for their upcoming seasons by inviting the public to hear scripts the company is considering and to provide feedback on what they hear.

Raconteur board member Andrew Hartley explains, "...Opening these readings to the public gives us an opportunity to get feedback from others, specifically regarding whether or not the story speaks to them, which is one of the keys to our mission."

The first reading will be held July 14th in the Main Library lobby balcony and will feature Arborphilia (or The Chopping Block) by Jacob M. Appel. It's been billed as a "sappy satire" that "manages to twist thoughts, maul marriage, poke politics, whack weather, muddy money and at the same time loop love around a tree."

This and future readings will be offered at the Columbus Metropolitan Library’s Main Branch (96 S. Grant Ave). These are free, public events. Donations are welcome. For additional information, visit Rtheatre.org or email info@raconteurtheatre.com.

Powerful Remarks Shared at Library Rally
On Thursday, June 25 a group of passionate library supporters rallied at the State Capitol to urge the legislature to restore funding for libraries. Several Friends of the Library members spoke eloquently about their love for libraries, including Laura Oliver and Mary Pat Martin. Tom Dillard, a former Friends president, agreed to have the text of his remarks shared here:

    "Let Our Libraries Live"

The proposed cuts in the state budget will severely injure most and eliminate many library budgets. Therefore our message to the state government is Let Our Libraries Live, all 251 of them.

Let our libraries continue to work as they:

  • Help citizens look up job opportunities in their community
  • Help citizens apply for jobs
  • Help citizens fill out resumes
  • Help citizens prepare for civil service exams

  • Let our libraries continue to teach as they:

  • Provide summer reading programs for children to keep their skills high
  • Provide after school programs
  • Provide teachers with resources they need for the class room
  • Help parents learn how best to care for their children
  • Help families learn how to budget and make a dollar stretch

  • Let our libraries continue to help communities build as they:

  • Provide meeting space for community meetings and events
  • Provide information about opportunities for communities to improve and grow
  • Provide resources about various interests in the communities that can improve their lot

  • Let our libraries continue to serve the citizens of their community as they:

  • Provide information, computers and support to all who ask
  • Provide links to the world and the future through doing research and information
  • Provide help to people solving problems they face

  • Let our libraries continue to inspire as they:

  • Share the vast literary resources with the community
  • Provide the tools and resources needed to help our citizens imagine, build and live their dreams
  • Provide the support needed for citizens to enrich their lives and the lives of the community

  • Let our libraries breathe the breath of knowledge, information and hope needed for our citizens to realize life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

    Let our libraries work

    Let our libraries teach

    Let our libraries build

    Let our libraries serve

    Let our libraries inspire

    Let our libraries breathe

Let our libraries live – with full funding.

    Act Now! Save Our Libraries!
Governor Strickland has recommended the elimination of $200+ million from the Public Library Fund over the next two years. WHAT YOU CAN DO: We have until July 1, 2009 to be heard! Visit OLC.org and SaveOhioLibraries for more info.

This proposal cuts CML’s state funding by 50%. These cuts will be devastating: closing branches, halting new books and materials, and shutting down programs and services that are so vital to our community!

Matthew Algeo at Main Library Thursday
We welcome author Matthew Algeo to the Main Library auditorium on Thursday, May 28 at 7:00. Algeo will be discussing and signing his latest book, Harry Truman's Excellent Adventure. The story recalls how on June 19, 1953, Harry Truman packed up his Chrysler New Yorker and did something no President has done before or since: He hit the road. No press, no Secret Service, just he and his sweetheart Bess off to visit friends and celebrate their anniversary in the Big Apple.

In this lively history, author Matthew Algeo meticulously details how Truman’s plan to blend in went wonderfully awry. Fellow diners, bellhops, cabbies, squealing teenagers at a Future Homemakers of America convention, and one very by-the-book Pennsylvania state trooper--all unknowingly conspired to blow his cover. Algeo revisits 2,500-mile route, staying at the same hotels and eating at the same diners, and takes readers on brief detours into topics such as the postwar American auto industry, McCarthyism, the nation’s highway system, and the decline of Main Street America. (There's even a chapter of a stop in Columbus!)

Matthew Algeo is a public radio reporter. His first book, Last Team Standing: How the Steelers and the Eagles--“The Steagles”--Saved Pro Football During World War II, won the 2006 Nelson Ross Award for best pro football historiography.

    Introducing: Our 2008 Annual Report
We are proud to be one of the first institutions – definitely one of the first libraries – to “go green” and create a completely online experience for our 2008 annual report.

This format is innovative and invites discovery (like the library itself!). It's fiscally responsible, saves paper and postage, and allows the viewer to really experience all the library offers and how it serves our community.

We have even built a “feedback area” where you can share what you discovered. So pass our story along to everyone you know...and let's truly "go global" with our reach! Send this link: ourstory.columbuslibrary.org.

    Save The Dream: Preventing Foreclosure
Preventing foreclosure is not only important to the thousands of families who lose their homes each year; it’s also vital to maintaining vibrant communities. Abandoned homes depress property values and invite crime. In Franklin County, there were more than 9,300 foreclosure filings last year, or more than five times more than there were just 13 years ago. But the good news is, state agencies are offering resources to help homeowners.

The Ohio Attorney General’s Office and other state agencies have resources to help Ohioans threatened by foreclosure. Save the Dream, a partnership with several different government and non-profit entities, offers resources and counseling on how to avoid foreclosure. Visit www.SaveTheDream.ohio.gov or call (888) 404-4674. Also, be aware of scams – foreclosure rescue, jobs training, credit card counseling, etc. If you fall victim or hear of one of these scams, please call (800) 282-0515 or visit www.SpeakOutOhio.gov.

If you're in danger of losing your home, please utilize these resources!

This article from the April Gale Report touches on a subject that we can relate to -- how, in these times, libraries are getting creative at marketing themselves. From using Twitter to helping customers with job seeking tools, libraries are getting their story out there, compiling testimonials and statistics they say will "reinvent people's perceptions of what libraries are."

    We're a 5-star library!
You probably know we were rated "#1 Library" in October by the Hennen Rankings...and the good news keeps coming. NOW, we're a "5 Star" library! Recently, Library Journal unveiled the results of their new assessment tool for public libraries – The LJ Index of Public Library Service. We are thrilled to announce to our community that not only did we receive the superior rating of a 5-star library, but we were also the highest scoring library in our division!

“This is another important achievement for our library, mostly because it reflects your love of this institution,” Executive Director Patrick Losinski said. “Whether you are a member of the staff, board of trustees, Friends of the Library, Foundation, or one of our terrific customers, you understand what it means to have a great library in our community. It is the passion and the dedication of you all that makes us as successful as we are.”

The LJ Index of Public Library Service utilizes four related per capita output indicators in order to rank libraries:
  • Circulation
  • User visits
  • Public Internet computer use
  • Program attendance

    Spotlight on Driving Park Branch
This “small but mighty” branch has a rich past! Did you know that Driving Park got its name from the horse racing track (“park”) that used to be there as early as the mid-1800s?

Back in the day, the 84-acre tract was where some of the fastest trotter and pacer miles were recorded. In 1879, S.C. Phillips drove an 11-year-old chestnut gelding, Sleepy Tom, to a mile pacing record of 2:14! In fact, many world records were set at the Grand Circuit Horse Races.

While horse racing was Driving Park’s mainstay, all manner of swiftness was displayed there, including bicycles and cars. In 1892, the Columbian Cycling Tournament opened with a parade of 500 cyclists. When automobiles came into fruition during the 1900s the track was converted to allow for auto racing. Its largely flat, stretched oval design allowed turn of the century speedsters to set many records at the racetrack. (One major event was the world's first 24-hour race in 1905.) Eddie Richenbacher, who grew up on Livingston Avenue just west of the park, thrilled crowds and won auto races before becoming a World War I flying ace.

By 1926, Driving Park had been divided into 522 city lots. By 1937, 85 houses had been built and continued to sell rapidly.

On October 9, 1972, our Driving Park branch opened. It was remodeled in 1991. A large rainbow with clouds greets children when they enter the Kid's Corner.

Today, the branch is known for its Festival of Art and Culture in the fall, 29,000 volumes in its collection (featuring a large African-American fiction collection) as well as a large collection of jazz and gospel music. It is a cornerstone of the neighborhood and, through actively participating in groups like Neighborhood Pride, takes great pride in keeping the community strong, safe and clean.

Come visit our “small but mighty” branch and see what you’ve been missing! And check here for our events.

    We're #1!
CML recently learned that we've been rated the #1 library in the nation for 2008 by Hennen’s American Public Library Ratings (HAPLR), a national standard. The HAPLR calculates 15 individual factors in order to rate about 9,000 libraries in the United States. Two factors that make a significant impact on HAPLR are circulation and user visits, both of which continue to increase here at CML as we focus on innovation and excellent customer service.

This is the 3rd time since 1999, the first year of the HAPLR, that Columbus Metropolitan Library has been rated #1. We were rated #1 in 2005 and 1999, and we've consistently been rated in the top 4 since HAPLR’s inception. We thank the people in our community, who love libraries and make great use of our resources. It is due to the loyalty of these customers and the passionate work of our staff that we continue to see such success in Columbus.

    Genealogy at Main Library
Along with many things you'll discover in our Genealogy department at Main is our large collection of Ohio Postcards which were purchased back in the 1970s. For security and preservation reasons they have remained out of the public eye and in storage. The collection consists of 22 notebooks containing over 9,000 postcards dating from the early 1900s to the 1970s and covering all areas of the state!

But now, the advent of the Internet and digitization allows us to bring these "out of the attic", (so to speak), and give them a place on our website so the public can enjoy them. All the cards have been scanned and staff is currently working on cataloging them for the new Digital Collections page which we hope to launch in 2009. We will have about 3,000-4,000 postcard ready to bring up when we launch, but more will follow! This is truly a fun, interesting and appealing collection which we think many people will enjoy!

And for some more great news: Genealogy, History and Travel (GHT) will be receiving another special genealogy collection, this time from The Palatines to America Society, a national society that specializes in German ancestral research. The collection will also include materials from areas in Switzerland, Austria, France and Poland where significant Germanic populations lived. The Palatines to America Society is a national society that was founded here in Columbus in 1975 and now has over 2000 members worldwide. We’ll be moving their collection to CML December 1st for review and processing and make it available to the public sometime in early 2009. Stay tuned!

    Our Homework Help Centers
15 of our branches have Homework Help Centers -- a special section of the library that has been set aside for students to use after school. It's staffed by volunteers and library employees who are ready and willing to help kids with one of their favorite things -- homework!

Our HHCs are FREE, and besides the smiling faces of our volunteers they also come equipped with computers, printers, school supplies, reference books and text books to help students successfully complete their work. We are proud of these "safe havens" that kids can go to after school and pave their way towards success in school...and life.

3rd Annual OOVAR Show opens October 13th!
The Columbus Metropolitan Library, Ohio Arts Council and Friends of the Library have once again partnered to bring arts opportunities to artists and the public by presenting a juried art show at the Columbus Metropolitan Library Main Library.

In 1998 the two organizations collaborated to create the Ohio Online Visual Artist Registry (OOVAR), a database that showcases the work of more than 700 artists from Ohio and around the world.

The Third Annual Online Visual Artist Registry Juried Art Show will feature original works of art by Ohio artists. Work will be selected through a blind jury process of distinguished art professionals, including professional juror, Ron Kroutel, an Athens area artist who one the juror’s choice award during the 2007 OOVAR exhibition. Great News From Our Friends
The Friends of the Library recently approved a gift of $65,000 for our new Homework Help Centers! The gift was the final amount needed to fully underwrite the capital cost of our three new centers opening in our Gahanna, Whetstone and Southeast branches this September. The $65,000 from the Friends of the Library joins a $25,000 grant from the Ingram-White Castle Foundation and a $45,000 gift from donors Don and Lisal Gorman.

The Friends of the Library is a membership organization that helps the library by supporting a variety of educational and community outreach programs. The Friends trustees were very enthusiastic about their gift. It was a happy moment when they voted yes! Part of the money will come as a result of a bequest the Friends received earlier this year.

    A Highlighter Worth Highlighting
We hope you are enjoying the new library toolbar. If you haven't had a chance to download it yet, you're missing out!

We think one of the coolest things about the library toolbar is the highlight feature.

Using the toolbar in conjunction with a site such as Amazon.com makes for fantastic results. Let's say you're browsing through Amazon and come across a book or CD that strikes your fancy. Highlight the title and voila! The text you highlighted automatically appears in the toolbar search box ready and waiting to be searched in the library's catalog. See for yourself!

    CML Represents at PLA
March 25 through 28th brought the 12th annual PLA (Public Library Association) conference to Minneapolis. And a handful of our talented crew were there at the forefront, representing CML as experts in our field. Their presentations showed loud and clear that we are truly leaders in the library world.

One of the things our staff discussed was our expertise in proactive reference: Getting out from behind the desk and interacting with our customers and circulating throughout our facilities. This method of serving our customers in such an engaging way was received with wide interest. Another area we spoke about was our experience in creating and operating Homework Help Centers. Our staff discussed the importance of having a Homework Help Center, and gave examples of things ro consider when planning a Homework Help Center--such as staffing; space; materials; recruiting, training and scheduling of volunteer tutors; funding and community partnerships.

And finally-- back by popular demand -- we were asked to give a repeat performance of our "36 Hour Turnaround"...a legendary accomplishment of our library! We are one of the ONLY libraries able to turn new material around (have it processed and on the shelves) under 48 hours! Our Technical Services department actually has an with average turnaround of 24-hours from receipt to branch. (Some libraries take a month to do this.) This discussion explained how technology, creativity, and teamwork made this possible, and how attendees could have this kind of turnaround within their own libraries.

We are so proud of our cutting edge staff and of our library! Our service, techniques and expertise make us one of the best libraries in the country.

It happens TONIGHT! Wed. Oct. 24, 7-8 p.m. at 75 N. High St., Dublin.

    Igniting our Youngest Minds
The way we serve our public directly links to both our mission and our vision: promoting reading and guiding learning in the pursuit of information, knowledge and wisdom; as well as engaging our diverse community in the adventures of reading and enhancing our quality of life. How do we do this?

One major way is through our focus on Young Minds, which uses several methods to get kids excited about reading. With our Ready to Read programs focusing on six pre-reading skills, toddler storytimes and baby laptimes, day care provider visits, Summer Reading Club, and the launch of seven new Homework Help Centers this fall, we are dedicated to making sure kids love to read at a very early age in order to succeed in school and in life. Through Young Minds, we're able to have a direct impact on "a lifetime of positive outcomes" for kids!

Spotlight on Staff: Going the Extra Mile...With a New Style!
CML employees are known for their dedication in getting kids to read. Some really give that extra edge. Case in point: Manager of our Linden Branch, Cathy Williams, made a deal with her "kids": if 50% of them completed Summer Reading Club, she'd dye her hair purple!

The kids were so eager to have her do this they furiously read to a fantastic 68% completion rate. Cathy made a huge difference with one particular boy who claimed he didn't like reading, hand-picking 7 books for him she knew he'd love and making a positive impact in his life, if only for that day. And when he saw her across the street at Linden's "National Night Out" block party, he yelled, "Miss Cathy -- I can't believe you did it!" All of our staff makes a difference in the lives of kids. We know that Summer Reading Club is a great and valuable program. But sometimes hearing about the little details that happen in the daily lives of staff -- and the kids they become so close with -- are what matter.

One of the major components of the Science, Business, and News Division of Main Library is the serials collection. The library has more than 1,000 periodical titles.

Much of this collection is reference only – items you can only use while in the library. However, during the past year, we have added circulating copies to this collection.

The serials collection is divided into four areas:
    • Circulating collection – magazines that check out for seven days
    • Newspapers – current newspapers for use in the library
    • Microfilm – hundreds of titles that include complete runs of The New York Times (back to 1851) and The Columbus Dispatch (back to 1871)
    • Reference serials – a collection of current and historical magazines
Find specific articles and obituaries easily by using one of the indexing resources on the library’s website under Electronic Resources. Online indexing includes sources such as the Ohio News Bank, The Columbus Dispatch archives, InfoTrac, Proquest Direct and the Columbus News Index.

To see indexing in hard copy form, visit the Science, Business and News Division for a complete run of The Reader’s Guide to Periodical Literature and The New York Times Index as well as many others to help you find book reviews, obituaries and vintage articles in hundreds of publications.

Customers may access the Columbus Metropolitan Library’s extensive collection from any catalog computer where you can find nearly three million library materials and access a wide variety of extensive electronic databases.

Heading Out of Town? Stop at the Library First
Borrow some audio-visual materials from the library and start planning your next trip.

Audio-visual materials amplify and extend the travel information found in books, magazines and on the Internet. The library offers hundreds of videotapes and DVDs for travelers and adventure seekers. Viewing scenic vistas around the world at home on your television helps you plan what you want to see. We have travel series that cover countries on every continent including PBS expert Rick Steves, Traveling Lite, Lonely Planet, AAA and Pilot Guides. Closer to home, we have a large selection of videos on national parks, destination cities like New York and Las Vegas, and every state in the U.S. If you're planning a trip closer to home, check out our collection on Ohio.

Another path to getting a taste of a place beforehand is through audio books. A great travel writer can bring a place and a moment to life by recording the story in a book-on-tape or CD format. Veteran writers like Paul Theroux (Ride the Iron Rooster), Bill Bryson (A Walk in the Woods) and Tim Cahill (Lost in My Own Backyard) invite you to experience the intimate details and subtle textures of locations in America and abroad.

    Folk and Fairy Tales
Come to the Center for Discovery at Main Library and discover old and new treasures in the Folk and Fairy Tale collection.

Customers of all ages explore this section for traditional fairy tales, such as Cinderella, Jack and the Beanstalk and Little Red Riding Hood. In recent years, not only have dozens of beautifully illustrated editions become available, there are also many wonderful variations. For example, The Runaway Tortilla is a Southwestern twist on the Gingerbread Man and Dusty Locks and the Three Bears by Susan Lowell is the Wild West-flavored version of that classic. Titles like these are fun to read and children can explore the similarities and differences from the original stories.

Variations from around the world are also popular with students and educators. For example, the library owns more than 100 different versions of Cinderella, including Egyptian, Chinese and Native American versions.

You’ll also find original folktales from every country. Teachers planning a multicultural unit can find folktales like Three Samurai Cats, a story from Japan by Eric Kimmell, or Anansi the Spider, a story from Africa, that are fun to read aloud and provide an additional avenue for learning about a new country.

Other exciting treasures in this genré include: the adventures of Robin Hood, folk heroes like Paul Bunyan, and creatures like unicorns, dragons and monsters. Want to tell ghost stories around the campfire? You’ll find plenty of scary folklore complete with spooky illustrations.

With a strong core of storytellers around Columbus, this collection is popular for uncovering old or new folktales to adapt and share with audiences. Teachers enjoy the cultural perspectives they can use in the classroom, and children simply love the stories – all helping to keep the folk tradition alive. Each of our libraries has folk and fairy tales in its collection, but the Center for Discovery has the most volumes. Visit the library to find, read and share a tale today.

Southeast Branch is Center of Community
Columbus Metropolitan Library offers Main Library and 20 branches to meet the informational needs of Franklin County.

This April, our Southeast Branch marks seven years of service in its current location. This busy branch is the hub of southeast Franklin County.

The original Southeast Branch opened on Winchester Pike in 1991. Growth in the community led to the construction of a larger building. It moved to its current location at 3980 S. Hamilton Rd. in 2000, and became a regional branch. Since then, the circulation and user visits have nearly doubled at this location.

The branch hosts programs for school-age children as well as programs for families and adults throughout the year. Branch staff take special care in hosting monthly programs for the large homeschooled population in their service district. Check our Events database to see what’s coming.

Teens are attracted to the colorful, comfortable Teen Nook. This branch also has a very active Summer VolunTeen Program with the highest number of VolunTeens in the system. This is a great way for kids between 12 and 17 years old to spend the summer.

All of our locations provide public computers with word processing capabilities and access to the Internet. These computers offer access to an extensive collection of electronic databases.

So stop by and visit this community gathering place with its friendly staff and see why this inviting branch is such a draw for residents.

Northside Branch Has Special Collections and Atmosphere
The Northside Branch is proud to provide excellent customer service and is a central resource for its community, which is just south of OSU’s campus.

The branch first opened its doors in 1940, just down the street from its current and fourth location at 1423 N. High St. It was our sixth branch of the system. Branch staff host many storytimes each week, as well as our Summer Reading Club for children, teens and adults each summer.

Just stopping by to see Planet Read, the beautiful wall mural in the children’s area, makes the visit worthwhile. It’s an outer spacescape that rockets young readers out of this world whenever they relax with a book there. Jayne Akison, one of our staff members, painted it in 1997.

Northside has many wonderful specialized collections of materials including historic home renovation, urban landscaping, and interior and exterior design. There is also an extensive collection of music CDs.

The branch’s many computers serve adults and children providing access to the Internet, word processing capabilities and our fantastic bank of electronic subscription databases. We pay for these extensive online resources so you can find what you need in the areas of health and medicine, business and technology, literature, current events, genealogy – just to name a few.

Don’t miss the concrete angel adornment at the roof’s peak on the front of the branch. Artist Eugene Friley created the Goddess of Books in 1992 to watch over library lovers everywhere.

    Help for Your Reluctant Reader
If your child shows no interest in reading, borrow an audio book – a book-on-tape or CD – from the library. Listening to a book for pleasure can lead to a love of reading.

And keep audio books in mind for car trips. There’s nothing better than having a professional storyteller reading a great book to the whole family. Systemwide, we have more than 15,000 audio books for children and teens so you’re bound to find something for everyone in your family!

The naming was approved by the library’s Board of Trustees this week and coincides with a $1 million planned gift from the Kessler family to the Columbus Metropolitan Library Foundation.

This is a fitting tribute to Mrs. Kessler’s many, significant contributions, which include: 14 years of service on our Board, a term as Board president, establishment of the library’s foundation, launch of the library’s annual fundraiser (Celebration of Learning) and her instrumental role in raising the initial $1.3 million to build the New Albany Branch.

Mrs. Kessler continues her loyal library support and serves on Columbus Metropolitan Library Foundation Board of Trustees. We are fortunate to have such a strong supporter in our community and are grateful for her leadership.

The name of this branch will remain the New Albany Branch. Only the building itself will receive Mrs. Kessler’s name.

Why Would Anyone Act that Way?
The mysteries of human behavior can be unlocked with a visit to Main Library’s Humanities, Fine Arts & Recreation Division.

If a spouse, friend or co-worker’s behavior has you confused, stop by this Division where thousands of books on psychology and self-help are housed.

The books that analyze personality with questionnaires are very popular. In The Color Code by Taylor Hartman, you’ll find insights into identity and relationships by taking a 45-question personality profile.

Uri Geller’s Life Signs shows the reader how to unlock the mind’s potential while improving personal, family and work relationships. Questions like “Who portrayed the ideal cowboy – John Wayne or Gary Cooper?” and “Which of these childhood fantasy worlds would you prefer to visit – Willy Wonka’s or Harry Potter’s?” make the quiz as entertaining as it is revealing.

For a comprehensive look at personality theories, check out The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Personality Profiles by Allen Miller and Susan Shelly. One valuable aspect is its in-depth discussion of personality testing.

Inquiring minds want to know! If you’re one them, come see us and check out one of our many informative books.

The serials collection is divided into three areas:
    • Current Issues – the library has an ongoing subscription for these titles
    • Back Issues – some of these titles date back in the early 1800s
    • Microfilm – this is home to hundreds of titles that include complete runs of The New York Times (back to 1851) and The Columbus Dispatch (back to 1871)
Find specific articles and obituaries easily by using one of the indexing resources on the library’s website under Electronic Resources.

Spotlight on the Martin Luther King Branch
The Martin Luther King Branch is located at the heart of an active and increasingly diverse neighborhood. Branch manager Jodi Lee is proud the branch is a primary source of information for many of Martin Luther King’s customers.

“We’re situated within walking distance to just about all of our customers – many of whom don’t have a car. They basically come to us for all of their information needs – for a new movie, to get a book for the civil service test, to get a CD that's just come out, when they need to know where they can fax something. We’re really their source,” Lee says.

In fact, the Martin Luther King Branch provides its community with more than just information – it’s one of a small handful of libraries used each summer by the Columbus Department of Parks and Recreation as a site to provide free lunches to children up to age 18. And, it is now one of four of our libraries to house a Homework Help Center (HHC), which provides a special space for kids to do homework. The HHC is staffed with adults who can assist children with their work, and public school textbooks are available for use, as well as plenty of school supplies.

The branch also sponsors a range of cultural events and collections, many of them in conjunction with other non-profit organizations. The branch’s popular open mic performance events, co-sponsored by Capacity, have drawn many talented teens from the neighborhood. With the help of Friends for the Arts and Community Enrichment (FACE), Lee was able to bring the jazz group Vocal Impact to perform at the branch. FACE is also involved in the branch’s African Treasure Chest room, a special collection of artifacts from Africa.

Lee sees the Martin Luther King Branch as an active part of its community.

“We have a strong community base, and we’re really looking out for the needs of the people in the community.”
