Great Gatsby Soiree

In celebration of the new film, The Great Gatsby starring Leonardo DiCaprio, the Drexel Theatre invites you to attend a Gatsy Soiree at 9 p.m. Thursday, May 9 followed by a screeningof the new film at 10 p.m. Join us as the Drexel lobby is transformed into a 1920s Speakeasy featuring Gatsby themed cocktails, period music and Charleston and Lindy-hop dance demos. Play Gatsby trivia and possibly win one of our fabulous prizes. Come in your best Roaring 20s attire or just as you are. Your admission ticket to the movie gets you into the Soiree.

In celebration of the new Columbus Museum of Art expansion, the Museum and the Columbus Historical Society present a conversation about building the Columbus Museum of Art. Architects Michael Bongiorno and Bob Loversidge will join CMA Executive Director Nannette V. Maciejunes to discuss the ins and outs and ups and downs of building the Columbus Museum of Art. Michael Bongiorno is the lead architect on the Design Group team that designed the new wing and the reconfiguration of the 1970s building. Bob Loversidge is the principal of Schooley Caldwell, the firm that designed and shepherded the renovation of our 1930s Beaux Arts building and Beaton Hall.

In conjunction with the Ohioana Book Festival, the MAC will host a meet & greet and book reading with Ohio author Carla Buckley. Carla Buckley was born in Washington, D.C. She has worked as an assistant press secretary for a U.S. senator, an analyst with the Smithsonian Institution, and a technical writer for a defense contractor. She lives in Columbus, Ohio, with her husband, an environmental scientist, and their three children. She is the author of Invisible (Ohioana Book Festival) and The Things That Keep Us Here, which was nominated for a Thriller Award as a Best First novel and the Ohioana Book Award for fiction. Carla serves on the Board of the International Thriller Writers as Vice President of Awards, and is currently at work on her next novel, which Bantam will publish.

Columbus Clippers vs. Charlotte Knights

Since their inception just five years ago, The Tenors have been thrilling audiences worldwide with their powerful voices and memorable melodies singing a blend of classical music and contemporary pop. Victor Micallef, Clifton Murray, Remigo Pereira, and Fraser Walters have performed on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" (with Celine Dion), for Her Majesty The Queen during her Diamond Jubilee at Windsor Castle, the live broadcast of the 2011 Emmy Awards in LA, at the opening ceremonies of Vancouver's 2010 Olympics, and for the NBA, MLB, and NHL All-Star Games. They have shared the stage with Sarah McLachlan, Neil Young, Paul Anka, Justin Bieber, Paul McCartney, Brian McKnight, David Foster, and Natalie Cole among others. For their live Columbus performance, The Tenors will draw selections from their new album, Lead With Your Heart, as well as some of their past hits.

Spring Fling is a Science Technology Engineering and Math [STEM] centered challenge and competition for students of all ages. High School participants will design and build trebuchets, 5th through 8th grades build catapults, and 2nd and 4th grade students build mini-catapults. Along with this classroom built machinery, students have an opportunity to design heraldic banners, and modernize a scene from a famous Shakespeare play.

Ohio Village Muffins Vintage Baseball vs. Capitol Cannons

For the third consecutive year the West Lawn of the Ohio Statehouse will host vintage "base ball" (historically two words), as members of the 130th Ohio General Assembly take on the Ohio Village Muffins Tuesday, May 7. Reminiscent of barnstorming tours of yesteryear, the match begins at 5:30 p.m. as the "Capitol Cannons" challenge the "Ohio Village Muffins" in an exhibition game of vintage base ball. The event is free and open to the public. Members of the 130th Ohio General Assembly, representing the Ohio Senate and the Ohio House of Representatives, will take a break from partisan politics as Republicans and Democrats, come together and cross the aisle to form the "Capitol Cannons."
