The so-called American Dream achieved by many in the 1950's and 60's was out of reach for most African Americans during that time. Segregation, discrimination and low wages kept African Americans from reaching this celebrated ideal of American life. Building the American Dream: A Dream Deferred sets the atmosphere of the time thru a series of dramatic readings from celebrated African American authors, storytellers, and poets. Local artists and community members deliver these dramatic readings accompanied by music and imagery from 50's and 60's. You'll experience the words and music that broke down racial barriers and introduced mainstream America to the struggles faced by African Americans in their pursuit of the American Dream.
