Sat, 02/07/2015 - 1:48pm
February 7-8, 2015 / Wexner Center Film/Video Theater
One of the most acclaimed movies from 2014's major film festival circuit and Mauritania's entry for the Best Foreign Film Oscar, Abderrahmane Sissako's new film looks at the terror and humiliation of occupation with an uncommonly serene eye. The film takes place in the ancient Malian city of Timbuktu, where foreign jihadists are enforcing bans against sports, music, loafing, and bareheaded women. Sissako gracefully pivots between multiple characters: some of whom are seen only fleetingly, and others we come to know intimately. Visually, Timbuktu is a series of wonders. Once seen, many of the film's striking images are not easily forgotten. And Sissako's becalmed and sensitive eye for beauty intensifies the absurdity and horror of the film's quietly unfolding tragedy-and shows without doubt that he is one of contemporary cinema's greatest humanists. (97 mins., DCP)

February 5-8, 2015 / Wexner Center Black Box on Mershon Stage
Fans of inventive and hilarious theater like Improbable's Panic and National Theatre of Scotland's The Strange Undoing of Prudencia Hart won't want to miss the Wex debut of UK ensemble Stan's Cafe and their side-splittingly funny yet probing production The Cardinals. Highly entertaining while illuminating our views on faith as well as religious and cultural differences, this play-within-a play depicts a touring puppet show devised by three crimson-robed cardinals on a mission of evangelism. When their puppets go missing, the cardinals step into the puppet theater themselves to bring their abbreviated and extrapolated reading of the Bible to life.

100 Years of Frank Sinatra ft. Dee Daniels, Dwight Lenox & Phil Clark

Sat, 02/07/2015 - 1:48pm
February 5-8, 2015 / Southern Theatre
Come fly away with the CJO as we pay tribute to The Chairman of the Board, on the 100th anniversary of his birth! Ol' Blue Eyes himself, Frank Sinatra, defined the classic American Songbook for decades with verve and panache. Long acclaimed as the world's greatest performer of popular music, Sinatra is the artist who set the standard for all others to follow. Sinatra was, of course, more than a singer-- he was an actor, recording artist, cabaret and concert star, radio and television personality, and, on occasion, producer, director, and conductor.
