Shadowbox Live: Back to the Garden

For the fourth year in a row, Shadowbox Live, in partnership with the Columbus Downtown Development Corporation, brings its original smash hit musical documentary, Back to the Garden to the Columbus Commons for a free performance. Back to the Garden premiered at Shadowbox Live in the fall of 2009. Audiences immediately connected with its message of peace, love and music, making it one of the most successful shows in Shadowbox Live's history and prompting what has become an annual outdoor performance. Back to the Garden tells the story of Rodney Benton, a reporter for the New York Times sent to cover the Woodstock Music Festival in 1969. While Benton is a fictitious character, he's loosely based on Barnard Collier, who really was sent to write about Woodstock. And like Collier, Benton is met with resistance from his editors when he tries to publish articles about peace and love.

The Ohio Village Muffins are a group of enthusiastic lovers of the game who carry on the tradition of the sport as it was played in mid-nineteenth-century America. The first thing we tell people new to "vintage" base ball is that, historically, "base ball" was two words. This is an important because we like to do everything as the base ball players of 1860 did it: We play by their rules, dress in their uniforms, and exemplify their gentlemanly behavior. Games are played against other vintage teams from Ohio and across the country.

Romantic Full Moon Canoe Trip

Join us to experience canoeing by the light of the moon. On this date we will canoe under the Waxing Crescent Moon. As the Moon moves around the Earth it becomes more illuminated and provides light that reflects off the Hocking River. In addition to the moon, we also provide tiki torches for each canoe to help navigate the river. The tiki torches also help in viewing the wildlife that will be settling in for the night. We push off at sunset and descend back to the canoe livery for an evening of relaxation.

Central Ohio Symphony: May Concert: Becoming America

Headlining the program is the Ohio premiere of Ellis Island, the Dream of America. Seven actors portray the experiences of immigrants from Poland, Greece, Italy, Hungary, Belgium, Ireland and Russia as recorded in the Ellis Island Oral History Project. Period photographs capture individual faces alternately worn, fearful or exuberant, upon arriving at the gateway to the Land of Opportunity. It is one of the most popular symphonic works with more than 170 performances by 60 orchestras. The many cultures of American will be explored through music by African American, Native American, Asian and Hispanic composers.

Based on our tour guides appearance on WOSU's All Sides with Ann Fisher a few months ago, Columbus Landmarks Foundation heard a great many stories about three classic places in the University District: O'Reilly's Pub, The Blue Danube, and Dick's Den. And since these are also establishments in one of our tour guide's neighborhood (and perhaps even her youth), there are many stories and some surprise information.
